Gregg Hurwitz, Orphan X

I had never heard of this series when I picked up the seventh book, Dark Horse, because the cover looked cool. Even then there was little indication it was a series, so I bought it. And woah, the cover did not lie – it WAS cool! Imagine how delighted I was to learn there were six others that preceded it to get through!

Orphan X is the first in the oft eponymously referred to Orphan X series. Centres on Evan Smoak, ex-government black program assassin and his pursuits in utilising his deadly skills for do-gooding via bad-arsery to help those in need as The Nowhere Man.

Insert standard assassin narrative here: The first one sees Evan trying to stay alive by constantly outmanoeuvring a rival assassin from the same program.

Original? Hardly. But I couldn’t help but love Evan. Is it because he is the same age as me? Almost as tall as me? A lone wolf type of guy? Is it because he is “not too good looking, just average”?

Okay, okay, I’ll stop. It might be a little macho, but genuinely it is just solid, entertaining stuff.

Recommend. 👍🏻
